The Kano State Ministry of Environment and Climate Change has issued a strong disclaimer against a circulating message falsely claiming to originate from the ministry regarding the Alu Avenue road reconstruction in Nasarawa GRA, labelling it unauthorised and misleading.
In an official public notice signed by Commissioner Dr Dahir M. Hashim, the ministry clarified that the message, bearing a forged signature, did not come from any government source and misrepresents the state’s position on the project.
The reconstruction, coordinated with the Ministries of Environment and Works, followed joint technical and environmental assessments, with a clear agreement prohibiting the removal of trees for the works.
Despite this, three trees were illegally felled by unidentified persons without approval, an act the commissioner described as “disheartening and unacceptable”.
The ministry has condemned the incident and launched legal proceedings against those responsible.
Commissioner Hashim reassured residents that no trees will be removed along Alu Avenue, or any road, without explicit government authorisation and environmental clearance.
He warned that illegal tree felling violates laws, causes environmental damage, and is “unpatriotic”, potentially leading to heavy fines or imprisonment.
The notice reiterated Kano’s ongoing commitment to balancing infrastructure development with the preservation of urban green spaces, urging the public to disregard unofficial communications and report violations.
This follows recent state initiatives on climate policy and afforestation, highlighting tensions between urban expansion and environmental safeguards in Nigeria’s northern hub.
