The Kano state government has embraced a proposed Date Palm Development Initiative from Saudi Arabia’s King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre (KSrelief), announced by the Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr Dahir M. Hashim.
The meeting, facilitated by the Federal Ministry of Environment, introduced KSrelief representatives to pilot the project in Kano, given its ideal climate and the fruit’s deep cultural and religious importance locally.
Modern planting methods will blend Saudi expertise with Kano professionals for knowledge sharing.
Commissioner Hashim, speaking on behalf of Governor Abba K. Yusuf, hailed the effort as pivotal to Kano’s afforestation, shelterbelt development, and climate goals. Beyond planting, it promises environmental restoration, economic gains, and social upliftment.
He stressed community involvement for sustainability and ownership, while inviting partnerships to enhance livelihoods and resilience.
This aligns with Nigeria’s push for agro-forestry amid climate challenges, positioning Kano as a hub for date palm innovation.
