The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ibeju‑Lekki Branch, has formally endorsed and signed a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with the Africa Green Economy & Sustainability Institute (AGESI), marking a major step forward in strengthening engineering competence, climate‑resilient infrastructure development, and sustainability leadership across Nigeria.

The endorsed MOU establishes a long‑term collaboration to equip engineers, planners, regulators, and infrastructure operators with globally aligned tools to address the escalating challenges of flooding, climate stress, land‑use change, Loss and Damage, and infrastructure fragility in rapidly developing regions.

The partnership is anchored in the Catchment Resilience Engineering Certification (CREC) programme powered by FIPRE™, presented to NSE Ibeju‑Lekki on 2 September 2026 and now formally adopted as a professional development pathway for engineers across Lagos and Nigeria.

A milestone for engineering leadership
Speaking at the endorsement ceremony, Engr. Olufemi Dare, FNSE, Chairman of NSE Ibeju‑Lekki Branch, stated, “With this signing, we are committing to a new era of engineering excellence. This partnership gives Nigerian engineers the globally aligned tools and evidence frameworks needed to address flooding, climate stress, Loss and Damage, and infrastructure fragility. It strengthens our ability to protect communities and lead Nigeria’s transition toward climate‑resilient engineering practice.”

The endorsed MOU aligns with leading international sustainability, ESG, climate‑risk, and engineering‑practice frameworks, including ISSB S1 & S2, TCFD climate‑risk governance, Nature‑related risk management standards, the GHG Protocol, SASB industry‑specific metrics, GRI sustainability reporting standards, the SDG Impact Standard, and ISO 53001 (Infrastructure Asset Management).

This alignment reinforces Nigeria’s leadership in climate‑resilient infrastructure development and strengthens Africa’s contribution to global sustainability and responsible‑development standards.

The endorsed MOU outlines joint action in:
⦁ Delivery of the CREC Masterclass and modular professional‑development programme
⦁ Development of catchment‑scale engineering tools, resilience maps, and adaptation plans
⦁ Professional training in FIPRE™, Source‑Pathway‑Receptor engineering, and climate‑risk governance
⦁ Multi‑agency coordination workflows for climate‑risk and Loss and Damage management
⦁ Research, innovation, and participation in global knowledge‑exchange platforms
⦁ Community adaptation kits, resilience clinics, and public‑safety tools

A major component of the endorsed partnership is the rollout of formal certification courses, including Catchment Resilience Engineering Certification (CREC), FIPRE™ Competency Certification, Climate‑Risk Governance and Adaptation Certification and Community‑Level Resilience and Equity Certification.

These programmes will equip engineers and technical professionals with globally aligned competencies in climate‑resilient engineering, ESG‑driven decision‑making, Loss and Damage assessment, and infrastructure asset‑management practices consistent with ISO 53001.

Dr Eugene Itua, Executive Director of AGESI, said, “The endorsement of this MOU signals a strong commitment to Africa’s sustainability transition. By equipping engineers, planners, and communities with evidence‑based tools, we are building resilience at scale. CREC is not just a training programme—it is a continental model for climate‑resilient engineering and Loss and Damage preparedness.”

NSE Ibeju‑Lekki Branch is a professional engineering body committed to advancing engineering excellence, public safety, and sustainable infrastructure development in Lagos State and beyond. AGESI is a leading institution driving sustainability education, climate‑risk governance, and green‑economy transition across Africa.
