As European demand for certified and sustainable agri-food products continues to grow, Moldova is strengthening its position as a reliable supplier of organic agricultural goods. One example is Prograin Organic, a Moldovan company that has developed an integrated organic agriculture model focused on exports, sustainability and long-term international partnerships.

The company’s evolution reflects a broader shift taking place in Moldova’s agri-food sector: moving from raw commodity exports towards certified products, higher added value and stronger integration into European supply chains.

Agriculture remains one of the key pillars of Moldova’s economy, contributing approximately 7.4% to GDP and generating more than 45% of the country’s total merchandise exports. Grains and oilseeds represent the largest category of agri-food exports, accounting for 42.3% of the sector’s total exports in 2025.

Against this background, Prograin Organic has built a business model that covers the full value chain: cultivation, collection, processing and export of certified organic products.

Prograin Organic works with 35 farmers in central and northern Moldova, supporting them in transitioning from conventional agriculture to organic practices aligned with European Union standards.

“For us, organic agriculture is a responsibility towards the environment and the future of agriculture in the Republic of Moldova. We believe in using the country’s agricultural potential through authentic products that are internationally competitive,” said Spartac Chilat, CEO of Prograin Organic.

The company’s model reduces risks for farmers, ensures product traceability and supports consistent access to Western markets, where demand for organic products continues to increase.

In 2025, Moldova’s exports of grains and oilseeds reached approximately $856 million, the highest level recorded in the past five years and up from around $655 million in 2024, representing a 31% increase. This development reflects the consolidation of export chains and growing international demand for certified agricultural raw materials.

To meet the strict requirements of international importers, Prograin Organic has developed a modern processing and storage hub in Florești, in northern Moldova. The facility includes its own laboratory and advanced cleaning and optical sorting technologies.

A key technological feature is the use of carbon dioxide treatment, which protects grains without the need for chemical pesticides. Each batch is monitored to guarantee full traceability, a critical requirement for agricultural exports to the European Union.

These investments allow Prograin Organic to transform agricultural production into certified finished products that can compete in mature international markets.

Exports account for around 80% of Prograin Organic’s activity. The company’s main export destinations include Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, France and Italy.

Its international expansion has been strategically supported by the Investment Agency of the Republic of Moldova through the BRIDGE Export programme. The programme helps Moldovan companies access foreign markets by supporting participation in international exhibitions, economic missions and B2B meetings with importers and foreign investors.

For Prograin Organic, participation in BIOFACH in Germany, the world’s leading trade fair for organic food, created opportunities to strengthen direct commercial relations with European distributors.

“The BRIDGE Export programme supports the internationalisation of Moldovan companies through concrete instruments: co-financing participation in international exhibitions, organising economic missions and facilitating B2B meetings with importers. It is a suitable tool for local companies aiming to increase export volumes, diversify sales markets and consolidate the presence of Moldovan products on competitive foreign markets,” said Irina Tolstousov, Deputy Director of the Investment Agency of the Republic of Moldova.

Over the past three years, the programme has generated more than MDL 1 billion in national exports, confirming the potential of Moldovan companies in the global agri-food market.
